WMO Africa Chapter’s Wheelchair Project: Mobility for Dignity

For over a decade, the World Memon Organisation (WMO) Africa Chapter has been running its transformative Wheelchair Distribution Project, bringing mobility, independence, and dignity to hundreds of elderly, disabled, and special-needs individuals across the continent. This ongoing humanitarian initiative specifically targets society’s most vulnerable members—the aged, infirm, and children with physical disabilities—who face daily challenges due to limited mobility.

Each wheelchair provided is more than just medical equipment; it represents restored freedom, social inclusion, and improved quality of life. Recipients—many of whom were previously bedridden or dependent on others for basic movement—gain the ability to attend school, access healthcare, and participate in community life. The project particularly focuses on long-term impact, distributing durable, high-quality wheelchairs suited to Africa’s terrain and recipients’ specific needs.

Operated under WMO’s broader healthcare and welfare mandate, the program exemplifies Islamic values of compassion and service. With plans to expand, the Africa Chapter aims to partner with local hospitals, NGOs, and community leaders to identify more beneficiaries annually. Future goals include customized wheelchairs for children and mobility training for caregivers.

This decade-long effort reflects the Memon community’s commitment to practical charity, proving that sometimes the most profound changes begin with helping someone take their first independent move forward.
